What you should know about this "super bug" and how to control the spread of MRSA infection

The MRSA Threat
MRSA refers to Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) bacteria. It's a strain of staph that has become resistant to the broad-spectrum antibiotics commonly used to treat it. MRSA is now one of today's "superbugs," resistant to all but the most powerful treatments.

It is responsible for many serious skin and soft tissue infections and for a serious form of pneumonia.

Where MRSA Comes From
Staph bacteria are normally found on the skin or in the nose of about one-third of the population. Many healthy people can have MRSA bacteria on their skin or in their nose without becoming sick. But they can still pass the germ to other people.

Generally, staph bacteria are harmless unless they enter the body through a cut or other wound. Even then, healthy people often experience only minor skin problems. But in older adults and people who are ill or have weakened immune systems, MRSA bacteria can cause serious illness.

How It Spreads
Like all staph bacteria, MRSA can be spread from one person to another through casual contact or through contaminated objects. Since healthy people can carry and spread staph without even knowing it, controlling MRSA takes effective cleaning, disinfection and hygienic practices.

Who Is At Risk
While older people and those with compromised immune systems are at greatest risk, any facility that serves the public should take special precautions to help reduce the spread of MRSA bacteria.

At-Risk Organizations & Facilities Include
Public and private schools and colleges
Golf courses
School athletic programs and facilities
Club teams
Boys & Girls Clubs
Pro sports facilities
Homeless shelters
Health clubs
Nursing homes/extended stay facilities

Prevention & Control Strategies
MRSA is antibiotic resistant. Fortunately, it isn't disinfectant resistant.
In fact, the best line of defense is the use of antibacterial soaps and special disinfectants proven effective against MRSA.

Zep Inc. offers you the following preventive procedures plus EPA-registered Zep disinfectants that can help you effectively prevent and control the spread of MRSA.

Proper hand washing and sanitizing – it's the single most important step in preventing the spread of infectious disease, including MRSA.
Use Zep liquid anti-bacterial hand soap
Work soap into a lather, washing between
fingers and under fingernails
Wet hands and wrists
Wash hands for at least 15 seconds
If using bar soaps or liquid soaps without anti-bacterial claims, use Zep hand sanitizer after hand washing DO NOT share towels - dry hands using
a clean cloth or paper towel
Avoid sharing of personal items
Use your own soap bars, towels, razors and other personal items Cover cuts and abrasions with a bandage until healed
Clean/disinfect all surfaces connected with body fluids (sweat, saliva, blood)
Disinfect mats, floors, benches, athletic equipment, training equipment, etc. Pay special attention to shared facilities such as locker rooms, showers, sinks, saunas and whirlpools
Wipe down equipment before and after use Clean and disinfect shared equipment surfaces daily
Encourage using a barrier such as clothing or cloth to separate
the body from shared equipment
Proper Laundering
Use high pH detergent, bleach in 160(degrees)F water temperature for 20-25 minutes Prevent cross contamination of laundered items by eliminating any contact with soiled laundry
Dry laundry at highest possible heat settings
